Légère Artist Feature | Scott Paddock
Why did you choose the saxophone over other reed instruments?
"The saxophone chose me! I went from piano, to trumpet, to trombone, and when I finally picked up a saxophone it just felt right".
What keeps you motivated to practice and play?
"For me it’s almost more like a spiritual thing. When I’m playing the saxophone, everything is in balance, which is kind of funny, because I’m a pretty aggressive player. And there is nothing more satisfying than crushing a solo over a thick groove, or finding a way to express yourself by reaching beyond where you were able to go the previous time."
What advice would you give to intermediate musicians taking the leap to the advanced/professional tier?
"Don’t follow the pack! The worst thing you can do is bury your head in a fake book and try to reinvent standards. Practice the standards, and get them under your fingers, but spend the majority of your time trying to find your unique musical voice. Look forwards instead of backwards. And most importantly, master the basics."
How has your musical life changed since you started playing Légère reeds?
"I never worry about reeds, which as a saxophone player, use to be a constant struggle. Legere reeds just work all of the time!"
What’s next for you in your musical career?
"I’m currently working on several projects. The first is called SAXOTRONIC which is combining live instruments, loops, and samples. I’ve always considered myself a modern saxophonist, and this project opens up so many possibilities for playing my saxophone in unchartered territories. Saxotronic, has been an entirely different approach to creating music. I’m also very excited about a new video project that I will be releasing on YouTube & Instagram, which will be live improvised small group recordings in nontraditional settings."
